car insurance in UK when a resident in France

Hello MSE people,

I am trying to find out how I can keep and insure in England my Dad's car to use when I visit my Mum.

My Dad has passed away, my Mum doesn't have a licence and I live permanently in France and no longer have residence address in England.

I would welcome any ideas on how this could be done, or any suggested companies willing to do it.

Many thanks,

papymars

Can you sorn it till you need it?

Then unsorn and buy tax and insurance using your parents address when you are here.
  • Maybe take your Dads car to France, register it there & fit French plates. Bring it back & leave it at your Mums!
Your problem is lots of UK insurers will only insure UK residents, you could insure it in France, I've seen UK cars in France with the French Insurance certificate on the windscreen. But the policy won't be on the MIB list, so you risk being pulled & all the hassle that entails.
My friend lives in Spain with a UK registered car. He is insured with a Gibraltar company for use in Spain & the policy is registered with the MIB. I'll try & find out who they are.

My parents live in France - they have a car that they bought in from the UK and have registered it in France.

They regularly bring the car back to the UK & have never been pulled over - don't see why it would be an issue?

Insure it in your mum's name with you as a named driver on the policy? If necessary apply for a provisional licence for mum-she doesn't have to use it.
