Ebay Returns Postage only £2.99??

Hi, just had a return request due to damage. When I click through it states print Ebay label at £2.99 or arrange own postage and send label to buyer. Where are Ebay getting £2.99 from? Cheapest courier would cost me around £6


Only ever had one damaged item returned to me and I sent through my own label so not really familiar with using Ebay labels

The 2.99 label is via Royal Mail Tracked.

Hi, thanks for reply. Do you mean Recorded? So EBay are offering me a totally irrelevant label and price. A rather odd and confusing way to run their return process. Will just book and send buyer a label.

Nope, it's a tracked service, only available to businesses. Tracked, unlike recorded delivery.

Now I'm even more confused. I tried booking my own label but courier would not accept me as both sender and recipient. Am I supposed to book as if I'm my buyer and give all their address details as sender? Anyway I went back to Ebay and clicked use Ebay label expecting some sort of booking form to come up but all I got was a page stating we have informed your buyer to return item. So I'm assuming they are going to receive a postage label. Have I done something wrong or is the Ebay price correct, my parcel is a largish box weighing over 2kg. It would've cost me around £6 with courier.

Personally I find it easier just to use the returns label. The risk is on the buyer as if the parcel was lost and tracking did not show it delivered, its their problem. It also is done automatically so there is no messing about with sending labels. You also only get charged if they use it. Had a few labels I paid for and sent, only for them not to be used.

I have in some cases used My Hermes to get things returned. I had to put their postcode for Parcel Shop drop off but to my address.

That returns label price is an agreement between eBay and RM based on volume averages. The weight is irrelevant. You will never be able to better that price.

I use RMT myself and I am cheaper than eBay.

The weight is sometimes relevant, If you sell large items and add the dimensions and weight to the listing, it will override the facility for eBay to supply a label if the item is too big or too heavy for RMT.

Thank you so much for clearing this up for me, had no idea Ebay offered this reduced return price. Glad I wasn't able to book the courier myself as it would've cost me around £6!
