General advice on music tickets

Options
Hi,

I'm just after some general advice on re-selling music tickets as I would like to make some money to be able to fund christmas presents for my kids.

I have acquired some tickets to a gig which I think will be popular but have not actually received the tickets yet and have no idea when they will be sent.

Am i doing anything wrong by selling the tickets and is there a particular site which people would recommend? I have heard of stub hub and others but wondered if one was more popular than another.

Another question is that the website indicated that entry would be refused at the venue if the person attending did not bring ID and it did not match the name on the ticket - is that something that is readily enforced? I presume not, otherwise websites such as stub hub would not be in assistance.

Sorry for the basic questions but I've never sold any tickets online before and any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Personally, I have serious issues with touting as it pushes prices up for music fans, has arguably contributed to the growth of scam websites and is just generally crappy behaviour. Music fans like me hate what you're doing. But it's not illegal.

Bands and venues that have started asking for ID are doing so precisely to stop what you're planning. In my experience they don't always, check but they often do. Any buyer would be taking a real gamble spending hundreds of pounds on a ticket only to get turned away at the door.

I'm going to guess that you have tickets to one of Adele's shows, as it looks like they're asking for photo ID there. My advice would be contact the ticket agent, return them (they'll take returns as these shows are super-popular) and let someone else go.

checking ID varies. With bigger and more popular shows they are likely to do random checks.

If you want to sell tickets you would do better to book a spare or two for gigs you do want to attend, that way you meet up outside the venue and there is no ID issue.

I'm not big on music events generally but they have simialr rules for popular shows and it is enforced - I saw the Benedict Cumberbatch 'Hamlet' and while my ID was not checked, they were making chakcs (apparently at random) so there is no guarantee it won't happen to you.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
