Car insurance problems - advice please

Can anyone offer advice please?

I have been implicated in a possible accident claim by another driver that I was not aware of until I received a letter from their insurance company (they use the same insurance provider as me!!!) I have disputed this and replied to them and this is ongoing. I have received a letter confirming this.

In the meantime I recently negotiated a renewal for my second car, which I paid over the phone using my debit card. Today, whilst I was banking online, I noticed a deduction of £51.91 going out to my insurance provider several days after paying for my renewal. I queried this with them and have been told that the money was taken because of the "fault" claim against me and my protected NCB has also been reduced.

So ..... Can they take money from my debit card without my authorisation? I have two separate policies with them.

Thanks in advance.

You need to check the agreement you signed regarding their right to make charges to your card.

If they haven't abided by any conditions take it up with them by way of a complaint which you can escalate to the FOS if you are unhappy with their response.

As far as "protected" NCD is concerned, again check your policy about what happens following any claim.

Normally you lose a "life" after a single claim, and your NCB is only reduced after multiple claims.

And if they have wrongly reduced it, then go down the complaint route to get it reinstated.
  • Thank you, I will do. I have noticed that they have removed my renewal document from my account and replaced it with the updated document showing the additional amount only but I will try to find something from last year if I can.
