Glasgow - Boston, best avoid heathrow??

Travelling over to Boston late October, I am due at a function which i cant miss on the sunday night but i cant leave the uk till either the friday night or during the saturday.

I am mindful of the recent airport strikes and all the hassles for people leaving Heathrow, when i have looked at the flights the options are flying from:

Glasgow to Amsterdam then Boston
Glasgow to Manchester then Boston or
Glasgow to Heathrow then Boston

So my question is should i avoid Heathrow and travel from one of the other places, oh and i have no hold luggage will be travelling very light

Really whichever's cheapest and/or quickest - if you've no hold baggage one of the main reasons for avoiding Heathrow goes away.

Amsterdam also has a reputation for losing luggage

flyglobespan.com offer a direct Glasgow - Boston service. Whilst some of their flights have had trouble this year the Boston flight seems to use a dedicated aircraft and operates quite alright. Since you are travelling with no hold luggage I would just take the cheapest/best timed option, though out of the 3 I would guess Manchester would be the simpliest.

Go via Dublin or Shannon with Aer Lingus. An extra advantage is that you clear US immigration before you board the aircraft in the Irish Republic.
  • Oh that looks like a good idea. Never tried that one before!

clearing us immigration to beat the hoards is a great idea, however the flights £250odd more expensive:eek:

Probably wouldn't even get you back by late november as they have a terrible serviceability/punctuality record ;)

Have you looked at Glasgow - New York with Continental? They fly every day from Glasgow and flights to Boston from NY are pretty much every couple of hours.
  • I would def avoid Heathrow. I travel a lot and have always had trouble in Heathrow
I would go with the New York flight esp if it is direct from Glasgow and then connect in New York to Boston

I frequently travel to Boston from Belfast. Continental Belfast to Newark and then connect with Continental to Boston. The Continental flights from Newark to Boston are pretty much every hour and if you just have hand luggage you can possibly go on standby to get an earlier flight which I've done.

You get off in Newark and go through immigration and then customs and then have to change terminals which is easy with a little train. You do have to go through security again the the other terminal but its usually fine. Pretty easy all round. I do it all the time.

Saves all the hassle and it means you are actually in the US before you connect whereas if you connect in other places they may only have flights once a day to the US and there is always a chance of delays, flights cancelled etc...

One thing though for your return if you are connecting through Newark, there is usually delays of flights from Boston to Newark either because of Newark weather or Boston's. But if you get to the airport early Continental will bump you up to an earlier flight so that you make your connection. This frequently happens to me

Hope you have a good trip
