I have a small hole on the wall next to a cable clip and need to figure out what to fill it with and what colour filler as want it to match wall colour, the wall colour is a creamy white, almost with a tint of yellow it looks. What else would I need to also smooth it off with?

Buy a small tub of Polyfilla or similar from hardware shop, even Poundshop. I use an old credit card to apply it to the hole. Fill above the surface as it shrinks when it dries. When dry, sand smooth with fine sand paper.
You'll need some matching paint though as filler will dry white.off white.0 -
Thanks, could I not just use Polyfilla magnolia rather than white polyfilla and then have to buy magnolia paint?0

I'd use the ready made polyfilla. I'm the world's worst/most inept DIYer ever ...and even I managed to fill a long ceiling crack and some wall issues with some of that and an old card.
I'd not worry about colour too much; without appearing rude .... it's not exactly the best finish in the world to start with, nobody's going to be down there scrutinising if it matches.0 -
Hi,
if you think magnolia will dry to the colour that you want then go for it, might be nearer than the white.
You can get 40 Shades of Green (written by Johnny Cash), 50 Shades of Grey, how many shades of magnolia can you get?
Money saving Tip: If you already have some white emulsion, take a small drop and gradually add a few grains of instant coffee and stir in, until desired colour is achieved.
As PasturesNew says, who's going to be looking that close?0 -

The only Polyfilla branded product I've seen that comes in a magnolia colour option is the Polyfilla Decorators Caulk.
What you want for this job (and what people generally mean by Polyfilla, as it's what the brand was first known for) is a product like Polyfilla Multipurpose that dries to a hard, sandable finish. The usual method is that the filler colour is unimportant as you use paint to give the desired finish. As paints are available in so many colours it would be impossible to sell filler to match them all, and the main time to use filler is just before painting anyway.
Decorators caulk is very different and cures to a flexible, rubbery consistency which you can't sand down to match the adjacent surface. It comes in a limited range of colours for convenience as it is intended for use along edges at the interface of different materials where neat painting would take time and a steady hand.0 -
If you know the exact colour of the existing wall by branded paint name or RAL number, buy a tester pot and paint it after filling/sanding as advised above. You will, though, never match it exactly as your existing paint will have faded/aged.0

I would knock down the entire wall and start again for a hole of that size. But maybe that's just me.
Just use polyfilla and paint over it. Nobody is going to notice if the colour doesn't match.0 -
I bought this

Or do you think I should have bought these two instead

If you don't mind my saying so. The fact that there is an ugly cable and cable clip visible is going to be far more noticeable than a slight chip in the plaster.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
