Economy 7 help

I've been looking at our utility bill and it says we use (edf standard variable E7 tariff)
1242kWh at a day rate of 17.04p per kWh
3270kWh at a night rate of 6.44p per kWh

I'm not sure how this can be as we don't run anything at night. Am I looking at this wrong?

Thanks for your help!

  • What you have no night storage heaters and no hot water ? Assuming you do have space & water heating that ratio is excellent it means you are using x3 6.44p cheap units for every single expensive 17.04p day rate unit.

  • If the eco 7 timer switch is out of synch you can be using the cheap night rate at any time in the 24 hrs. This would be when you are using an old analogue 24 hr circular timer switch. These old things can be nowhere near set at the correct time .Either way you are certainly using the correct ratio of cheap night units as if you are on night storage heaters.
  • Hi,

what heating have you got, how do you heat the water?

Are those figures for a year or 2/3 months?

Even with no electric heaters, when on E7 tariff, the whole house switches to 'cheap' rate overnight, fridge/freezer, anything on standby, etc, though wouldn't use that much.
  • Just phoned EDF & they think they have the readings the wrong way round, I'm being charged the lower rate for day use and vice versa!!

We don't have storage heaters, we're a 4 bed semi with gas central heating so we're running the usual fridge, stand by, etc overnight.

I'm looking at changing from economy 7 and going onto another tariff possibly with flow. Just need to check if they need to change the meter I think?

    Thanks fr your replies
  • Hi,

that would make sense with your usage.

Can you take a reading each night/morning to see what your usage is?

Can EDF aggregate your readings and just charge you on a single tariff?
  • Take a reading during the peak hours and another one a few hours later if you have used any energy, for example read the meter at 1pm and again at 5pm and see which reading has advanced. This should indicate which is the peak and off peak readings. Take a photograph of the readings also in case EDF Energy need them, it might speed the process up if the readings need to be flipped.
