Problems with second hand car

A dealer in Stockton. I don't think they're a dodgy trader, but I'm not happy to have three things to require fixing within 2 months. I expect an older car to have problems, but not so soon after buying and having a full health check.
The coolant problem was within a day of buying.
The fact they've sold you a car with, seemingly, a non-existent history doesn't suggest they're the most trustworthy of traders.

Same dealer you linked to in your 'Clio or Focus' thread by any chance?

Why on earth did you need a replacement carpet? Fitting a carpet in a modern car is a big job...

You can't claim for a repair somebody else did. The selling garage have to be given a chance to fix it themselves before you start to think about taking it elsewhere and charging it back to them.

As for the service book, manual etc, the lesson is that you never take delivery of the car until everything is ready. Once the car is out of the door, they put it to the bottom of the things to do.

They'd much rather sell another car than find the service book and manual for a car they already sold.

Assuming, of course, said paperwork ever existed...

Sounds like you want the reliability of a new car ( sometimes they go wrong ) in the form of an old, high mileage vehicle.

Honestly, I think you're the problem in the equation, not the vehicle

Are you implying second hand car dealers could be dodgy? :rotfl:

    Very helpful, thanks.
As I've said a few times, I don't expect no problems, but I don't expect hundreds of pounds worth of repairs within 2 months.

The carpet needed replaced as it had paint spilled and they couldn't get it out. They said before money changed hands that if they couldn't get it out then they'd replace it. They offered, I didn't bring it up at all.

As much as I would have loved to have them fix the alternator, it just wasn't possible. It failed in the middle of nowhere and I had to get a recovery vehicle to take me somewhere within 20 miles. We also needed the car for 2 days time and I was on a 13 hour shift the next day.

Got the V5C alright, but not the rest.
They offered to replace the carpet due to spilled paint, I didn't even mention it to them.
  • all the things listed here sounds like a 8 yr old ford! cracked split or chaffed pipes a weak alternator in winter. has it started rusting yet?lower doors? Rear arch? boot lid? don't worry that's to follow in the next 12 months!

Sadly I believe you have been told what they needed to tell you to get a sale. I'm genuinely sorry for you but they will have known just how much work is involved in replacing a carpet in the car, and the cost of the carpet plus labour. I know you don't need to be told this, but I have to echo comments above that in future don't even consider picking up and/or paying for a vehicle unless all promises have been fulfilled.

If it's just the boot carpet (which "spilled paint" makes me suspect), then it's a very quick and easy job and just a few quid from a scrappy.

Agreed - I've been taking 'carpet' at face value in absence of further detail.

I still suspect said carpet will/would never materialise from the dealer.

If it's who I think it may be (referenced in my earlier post), the selection of sub-£1000 'eye catchers' and 'stunners' on their website doesn't fill me with confidence in their stock list... Maybe just cynicism.
