Perhaps the following card fraud links might be useful.

I would definitely agree with the other posters, who suggested reporting the matter to the Police. It certainly makes it easier if you've got a crime no. to hand when dealing with the Bank. Your friend should be aware though, that often these matters can take quite a few weeks to be sorted out.

I would advise anyone who's had their card stolen to report it to the Bank and the police immediately. If you are aware that your card has been lost or stolen, then don't wait, act as soon as possible.

With regards to the overdraft balance it took her into this may be useful, saw it a while back.

My wife holds a few cards as a secondary card holder on my accounts and last month her handbag containing all the credit cards were stolen.

I decided not to report this theft, since the thief was spending less on these cards than my wife was!

Thanks for everyone's thoughts, especially ukric's link to that new ruling which looks very promising for my client.

I will encourage her to report the specific withdrawals to the police to prompt a CCTV check; we will challenge that Abbey allowed a £1500 withdrawal without the stipulated 48 hours' notice; and we will quote that new ruling that deems the cardholder only liable for the first £50 of the overdraft balance, however negligent they have been.

    Any further thoughts gratefully received.

    milkymocha (i looooove mocha :) ) ....

Me too. I was gutted when McDonald's stopped making them. They used to make mochas better than the coffee shops. (sigh)
The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.

A couple of points from an Abbey branch staff member. The £500 withdrawal limit is for our benefit as relatively small amounts of cash are kept at branches compared to some banks, and the 48 hour notice period is the amount of time it takes for cash to arrive after being ordered. However we will allow a withdrawal of any amount as long as the money is available and the customer has 2 forms of ID (debit card and driving licence). However we do take a photo of the person making the withdrawal, so there should be some nice clear shots of the culprit as well as the normal CCTV footage. A request to see the pics would have to come from the Police rather than the customer.

Another point is too off the record to post here, so I'll PM you.
