Where do i stand with getting a refund on a flight?

Hi

back in July i booked flights to Paris for my wife's 30th as a surprise, With everything that has gone on i had to tell her where i had booked and she no longer wants to travel which is fair enough. From information i have found unless the government advise of no flights to France then i am bound by the T&C's of the flight. I have contacted Flybe to see if they would be happy to refund the flights as a gesture of goodwill but have had a standard response saying i can change the flights to another destination and date but it will cos £50 per person (flights were only £200) Does anyone know of any other way to get a refund or be able to change the flights without a fee?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Dan

Flybe, along with most airlines do not do 'goodwill' although I believe for the weekend of the attacks they offered free transfers to other flights. If you decide not to travel, and you do not indicate when you are planning to go to Paris, then you lose all but the £13 per ticket APD which you can claim back.

Depending on the vote in the Commons today, we may well find parts of the UK are just as 'dangerous' as Paris but we tend to just keep going. I appreciate if she is going to be fearful the whole time there is no point in travelling and wasting more money but if it is not for a few months yet, I would be tempted to see if she changes her mind in the meantime. If it is this weekend on the other hand, then sorry the money is gone.
  • Thanks Alan flights are in March, trying to convince her to change her mind but hasn't worked yet. Be a shame not to go as it was our first holiday together 10 years ago as well but i completely understand where she is coming from at the same time
  • I don't think Paris is at a higher risk than anywhere else to be honest

Anything can happen, anywhere in the world, between now and next March. If your wife is so worried, i'd buy her something else for her birthday.

I've booked to go to Turkey next year, you can't let things like this rule your life. If it's not safe to travel when we're due to go then i'll change the destination.
  • No chance of getting around the fare rules of your tickets. If you want to change you'll have to pay the change fee. Just the APD refund if you cancel.
  • If she is nervous of going into the city why not use the flights but stay outwith Paris? Perhaps a small town, or rent a car and do a bit of exploring?

Paris has be hit in the most horrendous way, but I believe it could have been any major city... France was just 'unlucky' (I know that sound flippant - not intended as such). It is a lovely city and I have little doubt you will be welcomed with open arms if you were to go. i have just booked to go in May and although I have a little 'niggle' in the back of my mind I intend to ensure we have a great time.... and by doing so I will be sticking to fingers up at the scum that done and believe in what happened that night.

dont cancel. just keep ticket open. anything can happen-.bad weather, plane breaks down, low load, industrial action etc etc. If flyBe cancel for what ever reason then you will get a full refund.

But then you are meekly accepting that your wife is afflicted with a totally irrational fear as a result of the terrorists' psychological warfare. This is handing them a victory, encouraging them to continue their methods, and emboldening potential sympathisers. I hope you will excuse me for pointing this out, but assisting your wife to overcome being a casualty in this way should be more important than just looking for a refund.
