Hi,

As anyone got any recommendations for a free and legal MP3 converter programme? Basically I wish to convert my owned, physical CD's into MP3 so I can save a load to my phone to listen to on the move.

Thanks,
YNWA

The change to the law in 2014 that made ripping your own CDs legal in the UK was overturned on appeal in the High Court in June this year. Currently there is no legal way to make copies of your own music CDs. Link.

Since any ripping software you might use is no more, and no less, legal than any other, you have a completely free choice. Try Gizmo for recommendations.

Thanks All. I did not realise I was not legally allowed to convert the format of my owned music - seems daft. Will not be using that horrible iTunes programme, but thanks for the suggestion anyhow.

Exactly. You might as well just torrent tracks from the CDs you [STRIKE]own[/STRIKE] licence. :-/

On a serious note, Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is a great program for ripping audio CDs. It will work with the most ridiculously scratched, completely unplayable CDs. It's usually used for ripping to lossless formats where sound quality is important, so totally overkill for low-quality MP3s, but it works well anyway.

I would imagine torrenting would be more illegal as the way torrents work you would be uploading to other users, where as ripping a CD your not distributing to others and as a plus you can ensure your getting a quality rip.

TBF, even when it was illegal, I don't think anyone in the UK has ever been prosecuted for ripping their entire CD collection for personal use. Much like no one has ever been thrown before a judge recording Coronation Street to their VHS.

Exact Audio Copy, is supposed to be the best, but there's a learning curve. Easier to use is Fairstars CD Ripper.

I don't see a moral problem in copying a cd for personal use, how many of us copied tapes when younger. Are you expected to buy multiple copies of an album for the different formats you use? But the law is an !!!, as they say.

Or big media companies have a disproportionally large power over our lawmakers...
