British Gas

Hi all.

I recently moved into a house which was supplied for both gas and electricity by British Gas.

I'm not a British Gas customer so when I moved I switched the service to EON, who were offering the best deal at the time.

The switch took a little over a month so there is a period for which I owe British Gas for the gas and electricity I used.

After much back and forth on the phone with temhem I have finally managed to get them to send me a correct bill with the correct readings and dates on.

However, the cost of the bill is over double what I will be paying EON based on the same units.

I know that I probably have some sort of deemed contract with British Gas as I've used their service. But where do I stand on what they are charging? Surely they can't just charge what they like.

Does anyone have any advice?

Unfortunately they will have put you on their standard tariff, which is one of the most expensive around. They aren't just charging 'what they like', they are charging the published tariff. Just be glad you were only on it for a month !

    Hi ali_hire

Just a quick one but are the readings you mention on the final bill the same as those we've used to start our account? As the gaining supplier, it's our responsibility to let the losing supplier have these readings. It's to make sure the same energy is only charged once.

If there's a discrepancy, we can use an industry wide tool called an Agreed Readings Dispute (ARD) to sort it out. Provided, that is, the difference is above set thresholds. These are 250 units (electricity) and 125/45 units (5 dial gas/4 dial gas). Either supplier can start an ARD so please let us know if there is a discrepancy above these thresholds.

Hope this is of interest ali_hire but please ignore if all's okay with the readings.
