Not a new one, they are nearer £300, but there are plenty of second hand ones available
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • where would be the best place to get a second hand laptop, a place that can be trusted not to rip you off

Very difficult question that. I would be tempted to beg - borrow, but not steal the money to get a new one. £200 on a hunk of junk or get a new one £100 or so more that will last the college course, have legal operating system, year guarrentee etc. Check out dell

  • To echo wakandem's point, the value for money you'd get on a new £300 laptop nowadays is far, far greater than a 2nd hand one £100 less. Unfortunately Dell haven't got any of their really good <£300 laptop offers on at the moment (though they do change every week). If your budget's really £200 as an absolute maximum you could try this used model from Bigpockets.co.uk, an online retailer with a decent enough reputation:

It's a 1Ghz Pentium III, 30gb hard disk, 512mb RAM, 13.3" screen, CD drive, Wireless internet. I'd really recommend a new one though.

I'd be very reluctant to buy a second hand one. Heres why :-

If you buy it from a dealer, you're buying a £130 laptop, that he has put their margin onto.

If you buy privately, chances are some bloke has given £1000 for it four years ago and thus thinks its a giveaway at £200. It wont be. It will have about 1/4 of the computing power of a brand new machine costing £100 more.

HOWEVER if you only have £200 and thats all, my personal recommendation would be to check out ebay for a Dell Inspiron 1300. Look for one with a 1.6Ghz or greater processor and ideally with 1Gb RAM, and with the 15.4 inch screen. You might get one with the larger 60Gb HDD too if you're lucky. Most people will have reformatted them and reinstalled the drivers - confirm that with them. Also they dont make as much money at auction as they do as Buy it Now, so dont be afraid to bid on one and sit it out.

Some came with DVD writers, but most had the DVD / CD rewriter combo drive, which allows you to play CDs and DVDs and also to burn CDs.

tier1 does Refurbs. After deciding Ebay prices were too high and nothing good appeared in local Adtrader searches. I got one from Tier1 and it seems very solid and well sorted. But you may have to go above budget to get 1GB of memory.
