Can Large Conifers Be Kept in Pots?

  • Bamboos would be great, because they would form more of an even screen, but they don't do so well in windy conditions, especially if they dry out.

Would it also be better to put the plants in flatter, rather than taller, pots? For example, a half barrel, as this will provide a sturdier base.

Thanks for that. I've not really grown to like the appearance of bamboo, but will look at some more photos. It's also very windy here (blowing a gale just now.) Trellises, sheds etc, are often wrecked, and garden furniture sent flying over fences etc.
  • I think these would be good. They are supposedly laurel, bay or taxus?

I was going to suggest looking at hedging plants. Privet is quick growing and very hardy and there are nice variegated ones so you don't have to go for plain green.
  • Thanks Mojisola, and do you reckon privet could survive in wooden planters on a concrete terrace. I will do some research on it.

You have to work hard to kill privet. :)

With containers and large shrubs, the bigger the better. Use the water retaining granules when you plant them up - that gives a buffer against them drying out too quickly.
  • The conifers are in big wooden square tubs, lined with punctured polythene. Tubs are straight onto riven slabs. No issues yet !
