Adding a phone socket

  • I'd agree with running cat5e to the place upstairs that you want it.

You haven't said what sort of broadband you have, but with FTTC (aka "fibre", or "infinity" with BT internet) the VDSL modem needs to be plugged into the master socket, so running an extension for it is not an option - the filter is in the master socket faceplate so extensions do not have the signal anyway). ADSL is less fussy but it's still a good idea to plug the modem into the master socket rather than any extension.

If you must move the master socket then that's an Openreach job (arranged via your telephone line supplier) which will cost, no-one else can do it as the master socket and incoming line is their property, not yours.

  • The above post isn't quite accurate. You can run an extension for fibre DSL of you have the right faceplate. The most recent BT faceplate has an unfiltered extension point for DSL only on it.

I have an extension from my master socket running externally with external grade CAT5e (it only uses 2 cores) to the patch panel in the cupboard under my stairs where I keep my network switch and router. I then connect my openreach modem to the patch panel and to the router's WAN port.

    You need something like this:

Or the external kit if you want to run it outside. You will also need a mk3 filtered faceplate for your master socket which has the A/B terminals to take the extension from.

I didn't need the socket at the end as I already had the patch panel.
