New Engine Labour Prices

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I broke down on the M3 on Sunday night for no reason at all. Seems as if the engine seized due to an engine leak.

I've had a mechanic out to see it tonight and he has said worse case scenario it'll need a new engine. I'd be able to get a second hand engine for about £250. I was just wondering how much the labor would be for the engine to be fitted? He would be doing it as a private job so how much would I be looking at roughly? Will the price be worth it?

I have a Vauxhall Astra 1.4 2006.

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the forum, the troll alert illuminates from my seat, as you say a mechanic looked at the vehicle, assumed £250 ish for a replacement engine, yet you didn't feel to ask him about the fitting charge?
Anyways if it's not a troll post, then possibly it's not worth it, the neighbour had a 57 plate Astra serviced regularly and the engine just failed swarf in the oil, now got a 53 Pug.

£100 - £400. Are you going to service it and change stuff like the clutch whilst its apart?

Sell it and buy an M3?

  • Not a troll post, lol! Your right, I should have asked! He named so many thing it could have been I didn't ask labour prices for every single one. It wasn't until I came back inside and realised how expensive a new engine sounded. He has now quoted £300 labour, what do you think?

Granted that made me laugh, but aren't we all a bit fedup with everybody being accused of being a troll... even when it's obviously not

heh heh , it would be rude not to answer, yes indeed the OP has returned and the troll alert is switched off, it cannot be denied though, the way some posts come in, it was if it was the same person thinking up a scenario and then posting, as we have witnessed in the recent past.

How do you know if the engine you get will be any good? Better let your mechanic get one then if it won't run its his problem.
My friend sourced an engine himself and mechanic found it was shot, luckily before fitting it.

If your not going to change all the service items and fit a new clutch then you risk bigger bills.

The engine you fit may have its own set of problems. The scrapper may have let it run for 10 minutes and deemed it good not knowing the previous owner scrapped it because after 15 minutes it dropped onto 3 cylinders or boled all its water away or cuts out when upto temp.

Any inspection/tests would usually be does it start and run.
