Optiarc NEC AD-5170A Latest 1.13 firmware
Errors either No Seek Complete or Power Callibration error
Connected to own power line on brand new Antec PSU.
Set as and connected as master on second IDE channel. Same problem with and without UDMA enabled.

Burn starts very slowly when disabling buffer underun protection but then results in error "No Seek Complete".
Abit NF7-S v2.0 mobo, 1gb ram, 2800+ XP athlon.
Windows XP and Nero Burning Rom 7.
Have tried DVD cleaning disc but it will not even play it.
Using Verbatim DVD-R Taiyo Yuden 16x discs (also tried others but seeing as it can't write these ones...)

Have reinstalled windows and feel like I've tried everything possible. The drive is relatively new and from Ebuyer.

Have tried searching on net but not found anything of help. So do I have a duff DVD writer or is there something I have missed? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It sounds like you've covered all the possibles... Power calibration error sounds like it could be a failing laser or just dirty optics. The drive is trying to set the laser power to match the media, and failing. This link explains a bit about whats happening...

You could try DVD+R media, or CD-R. If they work then it seems likely to be a duff drive, though I would suspect that even if they don't

I think I'll go buy a new one anyway, they're only £20 for 20x ones these days. Am sure liteon will be a better brand than nec/optiarc anyway.

Edit: oh and forgot to mention tried both Microsoft generic and Nvidia IDE drivers (the latter are supposed to cause problems)
  • hi,,
i know this is an old tread, but i got the same problem with my ad-5170a
it reads the past dvds i burned on IOmega (2 year before) Maxell and Philips (1-16x, grey ones) medias (1 year i guess)

but yesterday i tried to burn two dvds (as multisession data), used Philips medias (1-16x, grey ones)
first one, writing process and with failure
second one, process succesful, but couldn't read the dvd
both of two gives the sames result when i inserted them on the driver, recognizes the cd but explorer says "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."
In nero, info tool says illegal dvd when i tried to continue multisession dvd.

i didn't get it, need a little help

I just bought a new DVD writer. They're under £20 now if you shop around.
