dog thefts

there appears to be a spate of dog thefts or attempted thefts where I live at the moment

Apparently they tried it on with this guys dog and he ended up head butting one of them. Now I don't condone violence, but in this case I have to say I hope that he really hurt him. :)

There was a similar attempt in my locl area last month.

Two men approached a woman walking with her dog and two shopping bags.

One man approached and grabbed her wrist saying 'let me help you with that'

He had grabbed the wrist if the hand that was holding the lead.

The woman screamed and they ran away.

They were later seen going onto the ferry to Orkney and coming back a few days later.

    The police were investigating.

The number of people who leave small, friendly easily stolen dogs tied up outside supermarkets, amazes me.

I know.I used to do it all the time years ago but if I had a dog now I most certainly would not dare.I dread to think about what happens to the poor dogs.
  • Since having my dog, I am always vigilant, even people who come up and want to stroke or talk about my dog.

I think because of my build of me (I weight train) and the size of my dog (large breed), I do not think anyone would dare trouble me. But I am always on guard, especially as I am female. I wear knuckle gloves/guards when walking my dog. I wear them as support when holding the lead... which is perfectly fine by me because it deters people who fancy their chances. ;-)
  • I have a Basset Hound who gets lots of attention. She's very friendly and doesn't have a clue so when she's off the lead she will go up to anyone. When living in my last town I had a lot of random strangers coming up and asking if I wanted to breed her - we never had that when we were living overseas - and I just used to say 'er no - she isn't able to, and anyways, she has hip dysplasia'. People find it hard to believe she is a rescue too and we haven't paid money for her and have no papers (for all I know she could be 99% and 1% god knows but that doesn't bother me).

We often take my inlaws Old English out with us as well and we worry that she will be taken too. They are happy to tie her to the gate while they walk past and come visit us, or leave her outside a shop while they run in, Doesn't bear thinking about.

There are often dogs tied up outside my local parade of shops. I can't believe that people don't realise the danger. One of my neighbours leaves her spaniel outside while she shops in the Co-op. I did mention it to her and she assured me that as we live in a good area the dog would be safe!

I would be terrified of my dog being taken and what might happen to it. Stolen dogs sometimes are returned for money but most times are either used for breeding or fighting.

I have a breed of dog that is not seen very often and I get a lot of people asking about him when I am walking him. A while ago though I had a guy probably late 20's who asked how much he was worth, had he been neutered and a few other strange questions. I said he had been neutered although he hasn't and then, because I felt uneasy I looked at my watch and said "Oh I must go and I am going to be late". I started to walk away but he was following behind.

I ended up walking a really long way home in case he followed me to see where I lived
