    whilst I do agree with what you're saying, and I appreciate that the point I make below is off-topic, I think it DOES demonstrate that airlines CAN impose conditions on flying.

    When travelling to Goa, Monarch check-in desks at Manchester Airport have, several times in the past, refused boarding to passengers who do not have accommodation vouchers.
    So, even people who have fullfilled Indian entry requirements by having a valid passport and visa have not been allowed to travel - without the accommodation voucher.
    For some reason, Manchester seems to be the only airport that does this, so maybe they've interpreted rules of entry to India differently.

    I know this for a fact as I've seen people turned away (in tears).

    It's all very well to quote EU law, but I certainly wouldn't want to stand and argue the toss with a determined check-in person and possible jeopardise my holiday.

    As I said earlier, if the OP doesn't have a really good reason not to renew NOW, my advice would be to get it sorted sooner rather than later.
