Sturggling with petrol vs. diesel decision

I think his point was - and my point would be - at that mileage you're risking DMF and DPF issues and going to pay a significantly higher price for the diesel variant, thats why i personally wouldnt consider it.
Doesnt mean it wouldnt "work"
I could if i had enough money use a harrier jump jet to take me to tescos. It would work, but i wouldnt consider it.
It would be funny watching them try to stick a parking ticket on the windscreen.0 -

There's a big push to improve local air quality as nationally we are missing lots of targets, and diesels are being blamed. Don't know if it's completely true, but that doesn't stop HM Govt. making bad decisions when it comes to future changes to VED.
I don't think that's really a decision, both are bad for the environment - reducing the use of a car entirely is going to be better for the environment.

We have a 2.5 litre diesel Vauxhall Antara and a 1.4 litre petrol Yaris.
We bought the Antara to pull our caravan, which is why we wanted a diesel and when we went to view the car with the object of buying it, the salesman advised us that it really wasn't suitable for simply pootling to the shops and back for short journeys, because of the particulate filter.
However, it does the job for which we bought it admirably and we tend to use the Yaris for running around and take the Antara on longer journeys, so haven't had a problem with it.A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.0 -

I thought the break even mark was closer to 12-15K these days0

We had the same car in petrol then diesel, did about 10k per year of which 8k was in very short trips, got low 20s mpg in the petrol and mid 30s in the diesel making the diesel an awful lot cheaper in fuel. Diesel was quicker to accelerate but petrol was quieter and nicer to drive.
A lot of the diesel savings were counteracted by the repair costs of dpf, turbo etc. I would have thought your journeys would be fine for a diesel unless you used it only for your tiny commute.
What are the official fuel consumption figures for the petrol and diesel (of course knocking off about 30% for real world expectations)?I think....0 -
I had a 207 1.6 hdi (110) and filled the tank weekly for work £48 (I do 400 miles a week), I went to a new fiesta st mountune (215) and put £40 a week in for the same miles. So I'm spending less but still doing the same miles per week. Trip computer on the hdi used to say 55mpg, on the fiesta its telling me 41mpg - go figure!0
