The dreaded call today. We have been bumped for someone with a greater housing need.

They called to ask why we had not sent back the last set of documents - we adv we have been chasing them the forms (via an online link), but not received them. Then advised of the above.

However as we hadn't reserved the property (which we couldn't do without completing the above forms) someone got in before us.

Directly after they sent through the docs with no problem at all.

    Sigh.

Now we have to keep our fingers cross someone cant proceed to get back in with a chance.

I'm really sorry to hear that this has happened after such a long wait. I hope that things start working out for you soon as this sounds like a thoroughly frustrating process- good luck!

Some of them do look pretty expensive, too. Just searching in the Portsmouth area at properties, and one of the social landlords here wants almost £220 per month in service charges alone!

There does seem to be quite some variation in the service charge amounts between housing associations- I've seen some that are about £20 and some that run into hundreds. From what I understand there's not really much 'service' provided either!

And it will keep going up and up, way above earnings or inflation, Even enfranchisement as a route is not possible.

I think the charge increases are expected to be 'reasonable' and justified. Reading around it looks like there are cases where people have challenged charge increases at tribunals or have badgered housing associations enough that more sensible increases in charges are made. However there certainly do seem to be some housing associations that make ridiculous hikes in service charges and that you need to do your homework to get anywhere with them.
