Looking For Free Audio Recorder For PC

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a free audio recording program to run in Windows 7 32bit. The Sound Recorder that comes with Win 7 accessories is absolutely pants, you can't even pause it.
I don't need anything too complicated and fancy, and it's intended use is for making voice recordings (not music) via a decent quality microphone that I can save to disc in a choice of formats. Some simple editing features would be desirable.

stop and resume is the same as pause, there is an optional save file dialogue in the middle though0

If you are referring to Windows Sound Recorder, in the version I've got, the moment you stop it you are prompted to save the file ... there doesn't appear to be a Resume function.... press cancel on the save as dialogue, then the resume button should appear0

Ah yes I see now, the Save As popup box was completely obscuring the Resume Option, thanks for that. Well it's redeemed itself a little bit but it's still a bit basic, especially as the only option for saving is in WMA format. I'll probably give Audacity a go when my microphone gets delivered.... Thanks for that recommendation hans. My new microphone arrived this morning, a Blue Snowball USB Mic, and I have now downloaded Audacity and the MP3 LAME converter for it. After a bit of tweaking of settings in Audacity the results saved in high quality MP3 are outstanding. :T...
