Ryanair car hire

Options
Can someone sort out my confusion please? Have hired a car via Ryanair. All the bumf I have says that collision damage waiver is included. I then get an email from saying "Don't forget your damage refund insurance. Text says: "We noticed that you didn’t purchase damage refund insurance with your car hire. When you pick-up your car at the counter, the car hire company will block a deposit of up to £2,500 on your credit card. You could lose this deposit if the car is damaged or stolen. "
Question - do I really need this? Seems a little like sharp practice to me.

Check the wording of the CDW. You have missed that it will have an excess you have to pay if you make a claim.

You need to buy extra insurance to cover this otherwise have your card "reserved" as they have told you.

(Just another example of "Ryanair" type pricing
  • You can buy a separate policy to cover this in the UK before you go. Although you will need to pay Insurance Premium Tax on it, personally, my distaste for the Chancellor is slightly less than for RyanAir - and it will probably work out cheaper.

Note that this won't stop them reserving the £2500 on your credit card.

Any separate policy you buy is based on "pay now and then claim"

To be fair to Ryanair I don't know of any car hire company that doesn't do the same, and if there are any that will surely be reflected in higher premiums. Although £2500 does seem particularly steep.

What if you don't have the £2500 on a credit card?

I have purchased the insurance separately but don't have that kind of money lying on a credit card!!
