Please recommend alternative supplier
Hi everyone,
Just found this BB and feel as if I’ve been walking around with my eyes shut.lo
I have 3 koi ponds and have been paying £110 per month DD to Powergen for the last 3 years, everything has been ok until earlier this week when I received a letter saying my DD payments will have to increase to £248 to cover existing and past consumption.
I telephone Powergen and spoke to a rather brusque lady, I said that it wasn’t my fault that I had been underpaying per month, as they have open access to the meter, and all previous correspondence from them said that the £110 was sufficient. My pleadings fell upon deaf ears and I was told that my DD will be altered to take £248 as from June.
I’ve never thought about changing before, but I’m now thinking that I should pay the outstanding monies to Powergen and find another supplier.
I would appreciate any thoughts and recommendations.
Kind regards to all.
Chris

The main criteria for choosing a new supplier is their tariff for the amount of gas/electricity you use.
If you have been paying the same monthly DD for 3 years, when prices have increased a great deal over this period, it is not surprising that you now have a large debit balance that has to be settled.
They have been remiss in not reviewing your DD over the last 3 years; but surely you would have noticed the amount outstanding increasing on each bill you received?
Personally I would treat it as a interest free loan you have received from Powergen.
If you do decide to stick with Powergen make sure they reduce your DD when you have cleared your debt. Otherwise you will build up a huge credit balance and be giving them an interest free loan0 -
Try here.
Equipower and Equigas are fair trade suppliers and they come out about best:
http://www.ebico.co.uk/
Check with Uswitch (you need to select the "show all suppliers option" as initially they only show 3* service rating and above). I found Equipower helpful and am switching.
And switch direct, not via Uswitch (why? see the Uswitch - what value do they add thread on this Utilities BB)0 -

Unfortunately Uswitch say they show all tariffs on their tv ad but this is not true. For all the tariffs you should use the link on MSE and visit energyhelpline
They also show all the older tariffs so if you are on a fixed deal(we have one from Scottish Power until 2006),you can at least work out how much you are paying against how much the tariffs are today.I think you can change even with arrears(believe that the ruling has changed) :beer:0 -
Hi Stonty and welcome, if you havent read Martins recent article on getting the best deal click on this link,
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1103281560,22751,
Im thinking of using ebico as they are good for low users too, not having standing charges and only one KWh rate per fuel.ac's lovechild0 -
