Agent has told me to increase my (accepted) offer to avoid being gazumped!

Just to add, I would never show an EA a single bank statement.
I would have my solicitor confirm I am able to proceed at the agreed price and that's it.0 -
I would tell them that you wonder how the house can possibly be offered elsewhere since your offer had already been accepted.
And that you are a man of your word but it seems the vendor is not.
As such your offer stands for a week at which point you will very politely withdraw and find someone who is both selling a house AND prepared to keep their word.0 -
It's very straightforward. It doesn't matter why the increase is being requested, or who's driving it. The vendor can pull out at any time until exchange for any reason - as can the buyer.
If you don't want to pay £2,500 extra, say just that.
What'll happen? Either the vendor will say "Oh, OK. Bye." or they'll grumble and your purchase will continue onwards. If they're the type to play silly beggars over £2,500 then be thankful you weren't further on when it happened and find another place.0 -

Maybe so. But the EA is in business and has bills and employees to pay. Their time would be better spent on another deal than messing around. To cover their operating costs they need to "earning" well into 3 figures per hour.0 -

EA is working for the vendor, not for you, so any 'advice' they give you is driven by that.
Like any 'agent', the EA's only concern is themselves
Why would an estate agent care who buys a property? unless there is more than one agent marketing it, then they get the sale either way, this bidding up stuff to beat another buyer is just BS to get more comission0
