How easy to get a mobile contract?

  • subject to status could mean that the person passes the companies internal scoring and so they don't do a full search.

I applied to Vodafone about 5 years ago and got turned down flat. My credit record was a mess back then, so I wasn't surprised. Ended up with T-mobile through e2save but I still ended up going PAYG this year as I was hardly using it.

I have 2 CCJ's and just a generally (very) bad credit file but I can't get a phone contract for love nor money. My mum has got my contract phone for me and I have the bill sent to my address. This is with Orange.

Why not use the fact that your current contract is coming to an end, in order to negotiate a 'better' deal with your current provider? It is amazing what they CAN offer if they feel that you are going to leave them for a better contract - just quote the contract that you are thinking of going after.
I am, currently, with O2, and I rang them a year ago, to ask to change my phone to PAYG (I did NOT mention my bankruptcy) They offered me a loyalty bonus, which has meant that I did NOT PAY A PENNY for eight months - I have just started paying again - £8.25 pcm, with 100 anytime/network minutes.
    Worth a try.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

  • I've been trying really hard in the past few days to get a new cashback mobile phone contract. Two websites (Simply3G and Mobiles2yourdoor) would not accept my Visa Electron card for payment (good start:mad: ) and Onestopphoneshop asked me to ring them up for further clarification. When I did call them, I was then told only O2 would accept my application on the condition that I pay a 150 quid deposit, which would be returned to me after 6 months. Of course, I said no!

Negotiating a better upgrade with my current provider (O2) probably is the only option left to me. I'm just wondering if it's worth the trouble getting a credit card, such as Vanquis, to pass all the hurdles. I've been in DMP for 6 months now and I reckon that's why I encounter all these problems. Any suggestions? Cheers!

I got a mobile contract as an 18 year old with no credit history. Don't know if that helps (that was a bit more than 3 years ago though)

Cashback!!! Watch out with those deals. In Birmingham recently a retailer closed recently leaving loads of people with very expensive contracts. My advice re cashback deals is if you wouldn't buy the phone deal without the cashback then don't buy it with cashback. I know there are compainies out there who have been going for ages but you may just be unlucky.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • As others have mentioned already, use the fact that you're coming to the end of your contract to negotiate a better deal with your current provider. This is what I intend to do in May when my contract will be up for renewal with Orange, because I'm sure by then my credit rating will be such a mess no-one else will touch me :o

My H did this with Orange - he was a month from the end of his contract he managed to get 500 minutes and unlimited text messages for £25.00 a month. We really make the most of this now, our landline bill is practically nothing, apart from the line rental. Top tip for you - 0870 and 0845 and the like are not included in the free minutes, but the way around this is to go to the saynoto0870 website and find the geographical number and dial that instead - never be ripped off by a 0870/0845 number again :D

Come May when my contract is up for renewal I'm going to have a look around, see what good deals are on offer and tell Orange that I'm considering leaving to go with xxxxx deal - I bet all my debt that they'll match or better it!

  • I am about to become bankrupt and have many defaults but orange gave me a contract, and i had an upgrade only a month ago. Saying that, for the amount I use it, i think i would be better off on PAYG, but the free broadband makes it more worthwhile as long as i dont go over my minutes.

P.S. Not sure ehat contract you are on, but orgagne gave me £150 for my old phone (N75, was only 9 months old but rubbish). This was done in an orange branch. The cost of the phone for the early upgrade of £100 was put onto my next bill, and the £150 taken off my next bill, so effectivly getting £50 free.

When you call your existing mobile phone company to say you want to leave they WILL try and keep you as a customer by offering you much better deals. If you say to them that you have seen this offer/tariff with another provider then they will almost certainly come up with a very competitive deal. That way there won't be another credit check.
    .....

  • Hi all,

Many thanks for your replies. Eventually I was forced to accept O2's offer and signed up for another 18 months at a reduced monthly rate. It's hard to resist the desire to have a new handset but I did just that. Reckon I'll buy a Nokia at some point when I feel a little bit richer:rolleyes: .

    Have a good week:beer:
