How easy to get a mobile contract?

Hi everyone.

A question for you all......

My current mobile phone contract is up for renwal in six months or so. I'm thinking of changing to a different provider (to get a better deal) but I'm worried if I pack in my existing contract I will struggle to get a new contract because of my recent bad financial state (over the last year or so).

So to recap, my question is this: How fussy are mobile phone companies in giving credit??

Anyones experiences would be very much appreciated.

Have YOU managed to get a new contract with bad credit (and how bad was your credit at the time?

Thanks!!

  • Hi There

I managed to get a contract for a new mobile phone after beginning a DMP (and therefore having many default notices). I don't know exactly what Credit Checks Mobile companies do but it seems to be more of an address track than a credit rating - I don't think you'll have a problem unless you have a debt with the company you're trying to get a contract with.
Proud to be dealing with my debt!

If you havent got a very good credit, the chances are you may get accepted but they might ask you for a £100 deposit for you get the phone, the £100 will be credited to your account and will be debited from your line rental or any calls and texts you send that arent free (after the allowences are used up.)
Had £80,000 in Savings - All GONE!!! BYE BYE

  • I used to be on contract with Orange. My credit record showed three years of perfect payments (the problems I had with that were cleared up years ago). November last year, I applied to Vodafone, intending to swap to them, and got turned down flat. I had multiple defaults, showing thousands owing, but my existing mobile phone contract details were perfectly maintained.

So instead, I swapped to Tesco PAYG, got the clubcard points on my phone, get the points on my top-ups, and top-up via regular direct debit, with a 10% discount - £15-worth of calls cost me £13.50.

thats what i had to do but it was a refundable after 12 months(on orange).now what i do is either upgrade or get another contract on orange from any retailer i get the best deal and cancel my existing contract.

Go PAYG. I was on a contract for about six months in 1998(!) and rapidly realised it's something that can be done without. I spend up to £10 a month on PAYG, using up gazillions on free texts and the rest on the odd phone call. I assume you have a landline - if not that may affect the situation slightly. I'm tempted to get a contract on a regular basis, especially now my old phone is playing up and the one I fancy costs a fortune, but contract phones are IMHO an unnecessary expense for someone with money problems! ( In the same way that I think Sky is unnecessary, we've only got FOUR channels - shock horror! Mind you, I would fight to the death to keep my broadband...!)

If you have a credit card you will generally be approved for a mobile contract, most stores don't run a credit search and consider anyone with a valid credit card as having a suitable credit rating without checking.

    Are you sure about this?
If this is true than why do so many promotions state ''subject to status''?
