VAT off in Airports

Not sure exactly where this post sits as it covers travel and tax issues and it is a similar issue to the news story relatively recently about airport shops.

I live and work in Turkey but come back to the UK to visit family. I am thinking about buying an MacBook Air. In shops and online, the price is £999 (which makes maths in this case incredibly easy for us to talk about).

Dixon airport shops have it for £889 but won't give a duty free form. Am I right in thinking that if I buy inside the UK as in PC World etc and get a duty free form to present at the airport, that is better as the VAT discount minus the admin charge is greater than that being presented at Dixons Airport.

My thinking is that at 20% VAT minus an admit charge the price would be about £830 so saving £59 on the Dixons price.

Or is there something I'm missing?

Thanks in advance

  • VAT free price if inc VAT is £999 is £832.50. So what's the admin charge? If it is less than £56.50 then it sounds like you would save some money.
  • Just re-read the globalblue website. I think that there is an admin fee for immediate reimbursement so maybe there is no admin charge for normal.

I guess Dixons pocket the £50 then. From this I guess I will buy it from a standard Dixons in the UK and then file the paperwork. £50 for a bit of form filling sounds a pretty good deal.
  • Thanks for your help :-)

Bit naughty though as the guy at Dixons was telling me that it would be the same price and you wouldn't find it cheaper.

    Thanks again
