Backpack durability

Hi
We bought a backpack for our son in March, it was from the club shop of the team he supports. We've recently noticed the stitching on the shoulder straps is completely coming away to the point it's almost unusable.
I didn't keep the receipt but emailed the club shop to see if they could offer a repair on it and was told "With most goods the minimum accepted life span is 6 months, unless specified with a guarantee.".
I don't think there is much I can do as we didn't keep the receipt but I was just curious as to the statutory rights applied to a fairly low cost item. He's still at primary school so the bag hasn't had to cope with much more than a gym kit and some homework so really should last longer than 6 months, in my opinion, without having to be chucked out!

I agree, their response is quite annoying. If it's just the stitching coming away, how straightforward would it be to just sew it back together ?0

The quality of the goods sold must be of satisfactory quality, where the test of what is satisfactory is what a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price, description and any other relevant factors.

I had a look at re-stitching it but it would have to go right through the shoulder straps themselves and into the bag. I'm not sure I have a needle strong enough for this!0 -

I teach in a primary school and I'm forever telling them to stop swinging their bags around by the straps/handles.0 -
