Hi all, I rent a 1 bed flat, it is electric only, with 3 x storage heaters in the Hall, bedroom and living room. I have only recently needed to heat it, can i check I am doing it the most efficient way?
I set the input to around 6 overnight, and the output to around 6 when I am in during the day?
Is it best to keep the input down during the day, and output down during the night? I must say that I don't like it stuffy. Be could to get a clear response many thanks

i have my input on nearly full and have the output closed during the night and during the day, untill around 7pm if it gets chilly i will open the output about 3/4 to let the heat out.

Make sure you are on a good e7 tariff

Assuming that they run on economy 7 (or whatever it's called these days) there shouldn't be any input during the day - that's not how they work. Input overnight, output during the day.
  • Hi,

wow, you've got your input at 6 already, what are you going to do when the winter comes?

My heaters max is 9 and I'm only at 2 just now, I turn them up as weather gets colder into the winter and gradually reduce as spring approaches.

I don't use a heater in my bedroom as I don't like a stuffy bedroom.

You could leave the bedroom door open a bit at night and get heat from the hall.

I never open my output, if you must open the output, then make sure you close it down at bedtime or when going out, to keep the heat in the bricks.

Leaving the output open whilst the heater is charging is just wasting electricity.
  • I agree with above...mine is 1 to 6 input, and is on 3 at the moment and output has never been opened in 7 years, also do not use bedroom heater as much too warm.
I only work 3 days now so home more often, but always warm.

Do you have a model number of the heater?

You need to leave the output closed, think of it as emergency only.
  • you need to think of the input as being how long you want it to store heat for, if you want it working all night til you go to bed you need to go quite high with it depending on the condition of your bricks, if they are quite old the heat wont last no matter how high you have the settings and would need replacing.

the output i would open up once i am home if the place is not warm enough otherwise i would leave it on the lowest setting.

Never heard of degrading bricks before.

They are essentially a lump of iron so I don't see how their ability to retain heat can be affected over time.

It should be closed, and not used unless you have failed to put enough heat in the night before (input not high enough).

If they are automatic charge control, just max out the input and leave the output alone. If the space is too hot the next day, crank it back a bit and try again. Keep cranking it back until you get the right temp balance, and then leave it there. The automatic charge control will then sort out the rest, taking more or less charge based on your overnight room temperature.

There might be an input during the day if you are on a legacy tariff. I get 2 hours in the afternoon and 5 at night.

I never have the input higher than 3 apart from 2010/11 winters when it got to -14 outside. Then input went up to 4.

Hardly ever turn the output up higher than 2/3 and just keep an ambient temperature. This does mean putting the heaters on earlier in the year than you might use GCH but overall my heating bills are lower than friends with equivalent size houses and GCH. And no servicing charges and they never go wrong.

Yeah mine is nearly on full i'm always cold always have been, i hate the winter time. I have 2 2.5kw in sitting room its a large room (High rise) and.

I have 1.5kw in bedroom thats on about 3/4 and that heats the hall and bathroom as i leave my bedroom door open all the time. And only if we have a really bad winter do i turn the hall heater on thats 1.5kw
