I'd say none of the above. I would buy a house now, get a firm anchor you can return to. As said by others, would you be happy moving back with your parents at your age? Would they be happy about it? House prices are only going up with the increasing shortage of housing stock and a growing population.

I'd probably say, buy a house, save up for a bit and then have a few extended holidays (1 month +) that mean you don't have to give up your jobs, but can still see something of the world until the point where children come into play.

Priorities can change and they can change fast, so I'd prefer the security of a roof over my head in the background.

I might be a little biased though as I travel the globe for my job, so I generally feel very little need for holidays, I prefer to kick back and relax in my own little corner of the world when I'm not away working...

What if you came back after a year and couldn't find jobs? You wouldn't have any savings left and no roof over your head. Not a situation I would want to be in, ever...
  • Travel now. Have a good enjoy of your life without children now.
  • Thank you all for the advice.

Plans are afoot to travel next year, although we are giving thought to the bigger picture by starting a Help To Buy ISA.

Any further advice on where best to travel/how to save money/top tips please let us know :)
  • good choice OP.

Got to be south east asia....Thailand especially, bit cliche perhaps but it ticks so many boxes that part of the world and is very very cheap so may help financially....India is also good and even cheaper but a bit more intense and hard going in some ways. For me, Australia and NZ never really appealed for some reason....seems a bit similar to the UK to be really fascinating although I guess you can work there and get paid ok and some practicalitiesl may be easier...admittedly the geography of those places is interesting. but in terms of an adventure I would go SE Asia Thailand and Vietnam especially!
  • I'm in a similar-ish position.

Me and my girlfriend want to go travelling (me a lot more than her). We have a house which we bought just over 2 year ago, the plan is to get a career break for 1 year then rent our property out while we are away. We're abit skeptical about renting our home out in case of damage etc. The last thing we want while we are away is worrying about what's happening at home.

Has anyone done this? Do you have any advice?

South Asia is the plan - Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. Keeping it cheap, may do Aus but only for a few weeks max to see some friends.

I'm desperate to go travelling - I'd go tomorrow if I could lol. You only live once ;-)

Not in the position but some pointers:
    - You need consent to let first (as I assume you want to move back after).
    - Do you know the full obligation of being landlord?
    - Would you have the funds for repairs? How would this be done?
