If the oil heating also heats your domestic hot water, is turning your thermostat down so low not putting you at risk from Legionella? I know 60 deg C is the recommended minimum temp for stored hot water in commercial properties.0

My boiler is large and old as well - the thermostat on the boiler is marked in Fahrenheit! I have tried turning the temperature down low and keeping the heating on all the time, but it does not save you any fuel as far as I could see. The problem is that living rooms will not get warm enough as the walls of the room will be still fairly cold unless you have the radiators of the adjacent rooms on as well. this means that you really have to have all the radiators in the house turned on. Its better, in my view, to have one or two rooms warm and the rest of the house cold than the whole house not very warm.0

A dehumidifier would help reduce or eliminate mould, but there's no point running it below a room temp of 10C, I'm told it won't remove moisture below 10C. We run ours in the hall with the bedroom doors open and it does a good job. Thermostatic valves on the radiators are a must, spend some time setting them and they are invaluable. Like many things there's no quick fix, but a bit of effort over a few weeks can lead to more comfort and saving.
Can I ask why you have a dehumidifier going? Poor ventilation?0 -
