  • If the oil heating also heats your domestic hot water, is turning your thermostat down so low not putting you at risk from Legionella? I know 60 deg C is the recommended minimum temp for stored hot water in commercial properties.

My boiler is large and old as well - the thermostat on the boiler is marked in Fahrenheit! I have tried turning the temperature down low and keeping the heating on all the time, but it does not save you any fuel as far as I could see. The problem is that living rooms will not get warm enough as the walls of the room will be still fairly cold unless you have the radiators of the adjacent rooms on as well. this means that you really have to have all the radiators in the house turned on. Its better, in my view, to have one or two rooms warm and the rest of the house cold than the whole house not very warm.

A dehumidifier would help reduce or eliminate mould, but there's no point running it below a room temp of 10C, I'm told it won't remove moisture below 10C. We run ours in the hall with the bedroom doors open and it does a good job. Thermostatic valves on the radiators are a must, spend some time setting them and they are invaluable. Like many things there's no quick fix, but a bit of effort over a few weeks can lead to more comfort and saving.

Can I ask why you have a dehumidifier going? Poor ventilation?

Didn't need one when we had an open fire! It only runs for a couple of hours in the evening, removes the moisture from cooking, dishwasher and shower. Works for us!

This is something I hadn't considered, so I took time to think it over. I don't consider there was any risk of Legionella, the water only dropped to 30C when the boiler wasn't running at its usual 65C, ie., from 10pm till 6am and 9am till 4pm. Doubt if anything could develop in those times, and if it did, would probably be killed off at 65C. Considering that ( in our case) the boiler isn't run all summer and the domestic water sits at ambient for several months, we're probably at more risk then. Electric shower and instant water heater provide hot water in summer. Anyway, thank you for your input, it did make me think!
