Flapjacks are easy to make dairy free, as is Tiffin, and any crumble topping and scones.

Custard powder is great if you use soya milk.

Asda do Almond dream ice cream (£2.50 at the moment) in salted caramel, mint choc chip and a praline one, plus of course vanilla.

Aldi Holly Lane mince pies are ok too. We do an apple and mincemeat strudel with jus roll puff pastry. Or turn it into a crumble if I am too lazy to bother. Nobody is ever too lazy to make a crumble!!

  • Thanks for the tip on Ice-cream. I don't shop at Asda because I prefer getting my Tesco points, but when I need an ice-cream fix I know where to go now.

Work from Home - Tresco used to do some LOVELY sorbets - I think Mango was absolutely gorgeous and the lemon was very refreshing - so I learned how to make sorbet!
its simply a heavy sugar syrup combined with your Blitzed or Blended fruit pulp. put in the freezer then an hour later you scrape through it with a fork and do that a couple of times while it freezes. (the more you scrape it through the smoother and easier it is to handle).
we make every kind of Sorbet imaginable - but Watermelon was his fave. In fact all the kids loved them and didn't miss ice cream at all!
  • We're a family of greedy vegans and are prepared to share a little secret with you....
There are literally hundreds of products suitable for a dairy-free diets- and they don't have to cost a fortune from "specialist" websites or the "free-from" section of supermarkets. The majority of these products are ridiculously over-priced and are simply rip-off.

I suggest you get in touch with the Vegan Society. They'll point you in the right direction- there are literally hundreds of products that you'd never guess would be dairy-free: Oreos and Hob Nobs anyone?

If you make any sort of effort to present your guest with something suitable, she'll be delighted! From my experience, most people simply don't bother to cater for vegans or special diets as it is perceived as being "difficult". It's not! Simply substitute a few ingredients and ensure the dish is suitable for everyone! Vegan mince-pies, Christmas pudding and custard (all available in Aldi or Asda!) is great for everyone. No special equipment or weird ingredients needed :D
Please note- if you want to win a Gold Star, the dark chocolate reindeers from Aldi are dairy-free :D And I bet she'd love a selection of vegan sweets- chocolate coins, Jelly Tots, liqueur chocolates (check ingredients) and nibbles!
It's lovely to see how much effort you're going to- it will be appreciated, I'm sure <3
  • Quite a lot of dark chocolate is dairy free, they seem to use soya instead.

In Aldi the normal range dark chocolate is (the cardboard box ones, there are 5 little bars in the box - can't remember the proper name) There's a chilli flavour, salted, almond - possibly a couple more that escape me. Have just bought boxes of dark chocolate ginger and brazil nuts from there that are also dairy free.

If anyone fancies treating themselves or someone else, Hotel chocolat has dairy free truffles. Or try Booja-booja (they also do ice cream). They are expensive - father christmas bought me a small box last year.
  • Thank you for this thread. It is very timely as I am having friends over for drinks and snacks. One of my friends has a severe dairy intolerance and another is vegan.
