Not totally true, if they asked you to name a driver more than six months after the incident then you would not have to as the time limit of six months would have passed and no prosecution would be possible because of such.
The original offence may 'time out' after six months, but even after six months, a failure to name the driver in respect of a s.172, Road Traffic Act 1988 requirement could lead to a prosecution for that offence.0 -

Not true, what if they were investigating dangerous driving?0 -

Taking other peoples advice - How does the S172 offence not apply here then ?0 -
In the event of an accident, the 14 day rule does not apply.
Presumably, the 14 day rule was some sort of common sense concession to the fact that with camera enforcement, you might not realise you had committed an offence, and would have to rely on memory of who was driving at the time.
Whereas offences that you would definitely remember like dangerous driving, failing to stop in an accident are not subject to the 14 day rule.
The nip and 14 day rule was there before camera enforcement.0 -

It may, but the six months will commence at the end of the period that the requirement to name the driver has been made - which can be later than six months after the original offence.0 -

It MUST be later, unless the police are clairvoyant.

Forces don't send reminders
In which case, why wasn't that stated on the reply to this FOI request?
Instead of stating that reminders were not sent, they simply stated "South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership do not collate or hold any statistics regarding claims or instances of non receipt of a NIP or any form of reminders sent"
