Can "too big" constitute a fault?

I ordered an own brand (Karrimor) jacket from Sports Direct.
I paid for next day delivery.
Both Karrimor and Sports direct use identical sizing charts, with medium corresponding to38-40 chest measurements.
The jacket is huge - I would estimate that it would comfortably fit at least a 46 chest, if not more. I feel like I am swimming in it.

I know that there will be some variation on sizes with different companies, and I usually accept this, but on this occasion I am really annoyed. I paid £7 for delivery, will have to pay another few quid to return it, and there was NO chance of me ordering the correct size based on the information given to me online. The measurements are SO fare off the jacket that I received that a return was always inevitable. In my opinion this makes the goods faulty and I should be entitled to a full refund including postage.

Just wondering what other people's thoughts are - again, I would normally say "there's an inherent risk in buying online and size guides are only approx, but think that this case is just taking the p**s and the item was missold.

Have you measure it to see what it actually measures (as you say 'I estimate...')

Do you have a link to the actual page of this jacket with the sizing information?

They should always refund the outbound delivery charges unless:
    1. You paid for a premium delivery service - in which case they still have to refund the standard delivery charge (but can keep the extra)
    2. You ordered more than 1 item, the delivery charge is per order (rather than per item) and you are keeping some of the order.

The return postage costs will really come down to whether the goods match their description/are of satisfactory quality or not. Have you actually measured the jacket?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Size guide:
[I am a new poster so it won't let me link. Just google 'sports direct sizing guide' - it's that one, I can 100% confirm]
Karrimor is basically Sports Direct own brand - their websites are the same, as are the size guides.

When I measured it it was about 49 inches across the chest.
I know a jacket will have some added inches built in - I think industry standard is 3-4 inches, otherwise you wouldn't be able to get it on. I also know that coats will allow you to wear jumpers underneath, but even with a couple of chunky jumpers on it's stupidly massive (I'm a 40 chest).
I since found a couple of reviews saying sizes run large and that a medium is appropriate for people weighing about 85kg, which is clearly not 38-40 chest. I either missed them or they didn't come up on the mobile site but I should have done more research before buying but had just bought a t-shirt from same company and it fitted perfectly so gave them some blind faith (foolishly).

As Karrimor jackets go up to size 2XL, some even 4XL, I'm wondering if this has been mis-labelled as M.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Yes too big can constitute a fault. As you say there will be some latitude given, so you need to be able to show it cannot reasonably be described as it was.

Perhaps take some photos showing the jacket against others of the same size and with a measuring tape visible.

I bought jeans online from a well known retailer, with 30 inch waist.

When I tried them on they were huge and on measuring they were 37 inches (the waist measurement, they weren't low cut ones where the top wouldn't really sit at the waist)

I sent them back saying they were labelled wrongly, but since found out that they are all sized like that! got a refund no problem
