How exactly would I do this ? I live abroad, where my current account is Standard Chartered.

Well you're the one who said "would bringin in armfuls of cash do the trick?" so I took you at your word that you would be returning to the UK and bringing cash with you. And as you have subsequently found you can pay your card in cash over the counter at a Barclays branch.

Of course, if you'd bothered to say in the first place that your debt is £16K then I probably would have suggested something more suitable, but I'm starting to have my doubts about the entire story so you're on your own as far as I'm concerned.

How would paying in cash into your own current account be any difficult, unless it's a ridiculous amount of cash? There are paying in machines as well at some banks as well which would make this a breeze.

I'm no expert but I believe anti-money laundering rules would require the bank to verify the source of the funds, for significant amounts of cash.

Especially if the bank is HSBC.

How much cash can you feed into a paying in machine?

The first thing that puzzles me here is how you are keeping up the minimum payments on the £16K debt on your Barclaycard? You must be making them or the account would have been defaulted long ago. Can you not make the larger payment in the same way?
People do not get high limit (16K+) Barclaycards without a UK bank account. They just don't. So what happened to your UK bank account.
Can you just forget about using this 'preferred exchange dealer' and saving a few pennies by uising them and get your local bank to make the payments directly?

Hi again, thanks for the response.

I'm really struggling to understand what in my story you don't think passes the smell test ?

I've lived abroad for a year - my UK current account with IF is still active. I've been making payments back to my UK Barclaycard during the course of the year, yet it's still at £16k (;-(), I can't get cash from a dealer here into my IF account for some reason, and I've asked for alternative suggestions. That's all. Not sure why you've suddenly got so passive/aggressive with me ?!

If you can suggest "something more suitable", perhaps you can share your wisdom. This thread may be being read by others with similar problems and perhaps you'd be doing the broader forum a solid ?

BTW - I'm sitting here with £18k cash, a completed HMRC form, and a feeling that I'll be swaggering through Heathrow tomorrow morning feeling like a bad mutha :-)

Can I suggest you read the entire thread. I have my Intelligent Finance account in the UK that I've been topping up through my girlfriends UK account through the year. This, for reasons I wont go into, is no longer an option.
