so for €200 I would chance it & ignore.

Ditto, I ignored a speeding ticket in Italy, got a follow up demand & ignored that, haven't heard anything since, that was about 5 years ago.

We did have an £80 charge taken out last month by the hire car company, they couldn't tell us why they'd taken it so we got the credit card company to investigate if it was fraudulent but I guess it could be this admin fee.

We got to the airport really early, but it took nearly 2 hours to hand the hire car keys back (we think this speeding ticket is an hour after this, so a long time after we stopped driving), then it took 50 minutes to queue for check in. We were travelling with our two small children so we'd allowed a LOT of extra time as the plan was to get to the airport early, give them dinner once we were checked in, change them into pjs for the flight (didn't land until 10pm), see the planes etc. As it was we had to run from check in to the gate as the queues for the hire car and the check in had been so terrible.

Thank you for all your advice, I will look a little more into if this is a genuine letter first of all.

It is the hire companies car, therefore they should know who is responsible for it and at what time it was dropped back with them. If they can't prove it, I'd make a very serious complaint that they handed your details over to the police without any idea whether it was you or someone else that committed the offence.

Unless of course they have more detail than you on when it was handed back.
  • If it was me I'd just file it away and ignore it.

Does the Italian system not have to state where the car was travelling when the ticket was issued, as well as when? if ticket was issued on the way to the airport from Pisa (or wherever you were), it makes it more likely to be you (not necessarily you, though). If the car was heading away from the airport, other side of the road.... hmmm.

As for speaking Italian... well, I speak a little, others on here are, no doubt, fluent. Google translate does a pretty good job too...

I'd have thought it worth a brief attempt to gain more info, like where speeding was recorded. I find it difficult to believe that information isn't recorded.

It says the ticket was issued on the road outside the airport, but not the direction of travel.

But presumably the hire company has the OP's credit card to charge any fine(s) to.
  • Just throw the letter away and forget about it.

Op have you got any Rac /Aa or similar breakdown cover for your car here ? They may have some sort of legal department that can give you advice, or even help you.
