DBS clearance - so slow!!

How long do these things usually take to clear these days? I'm a 28 year old male living in Yorkshire who has committed no crimes and always been in the public sector working with children. I'm also a postgrad student so any financial support from places such as the Jobcentre is out of the question.

I currently have got a new job and i'm currently coming into the 7th week of waiting for clearance! I'm struggling like hell financially due to waiting for this damn thing to process! It makes me wish i wasn't stuck in this sector! I'm currently in stage 4. Everytime i call the DBS it's the same "can't do anything about it". They don't take into account whatsoever that some people need to work! I know ensuring the safety of vulnerable people is important, but waiting near on 2 months now is a joke!

  • yeah, I heard this at work yesterday - we're waiting for clearance on someone as well. The longest person waiting has been waiting nearly 6 months, it seems! (I think that's longest waiting nationally)
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

6 months is insane! The whole DBS system isn't fit for purpose!

Hopefully i won't have to wait that long? :(
  • It can sometimes take longer if you have moved address in the past five years or so, especially if you have changed county.

I have known people who (with only one address, therefore only one police force to check) have phoned the police and asked to speak to whoever is in charge of the DBS. Explain the long wait. Sometimes this is enough to get to the top of their pile.

    Good luck!

I think i'll need it. i moved from West to South Yorkshire because of uni back in 2013 so thats gonna cause the thing to take ages to clear :(

All i can do is wait 12 days or so until 60 days has passed so i can esclate it :(

You can check the status of your application online. My guess is its at the police check stage.

DBS have no control over this and its down to the individual forces. Some are quick with dedicated teams, others are basically crap. Obviously if you have moved the form will go to all police forces in your 5 year address history so its just going to make things more difficult. Name changes etc also delay things.
  • My last two checks in the last year came back really quickly - one within two days and one within 5 days.

This is a ridiculous situation and is entirely down to the costcutting in essential services.

have you tried to find out whether it's West Yorkshire or South Yorkshire that's causing the problem?

Sorry, I'm just curious because I have a DBS ongoing with one of them.
  • I've just had to do another one for uni...an enhanced one for working with children. It came back within 48 hours.
