8 Port Gigabit Ethernet help please..

Options
Will a an 8 port Gigabit Ethernet port 10/100/1000 mbps do what I want it to ?

We have a cat5 cable from the router to the upstairs.

Both of my sons enjoy PC gaming.
I want to watch catch up TV sometimes
Sometimes we all want to be doing our own thing at the same time.
All 3 are upstairs.
Will the Ethernet port allow us to split the internet between the 3 activities, allow us to do our own thing and keep the speed?

thanks

A network switch will do what you want.
  • Yes an unmanaged switch will let you connect many devices. It won't magically increase the throughput from your broadband if you are concurrently online gaming and streaming TV

    Thanks
I'm not quite sure what you mean though.
If I get a BB speed of 38 mbps will each PC get significantly less speed if they are both playing online at the same time?
Will this reduce even more with the online viewing?

    thanks

    The short answer is yes.

You get 38mbs and that is shared between everyone who is on-line at the same time. If you are streaming TV they will get less bandwith and will probably notice the difference.

You may be confusing the two speeds: the gigabit speed between each PC and the ethernet switch and the router, and the 30-times-slower (download) speed of your internet connection. The ethernet switch will connect to an ethernet port on your router, and the bottleneck for data transfer is your broadband line.

I would imagine that you could use a five-port ethernet switch (one cable to the router, and three to the three PCs) and might get away with a 100 Mbps switch rather than gigabit! Just over £6 from Amazon...

    Ok, thanks...

We have a dual band router

Would a wireless thing ie Nowtv box have less effect on the bandwidth for the gamers?

    thanks

    No.

You have a certain bandwidth coming into the house and that's it.

Think of it as a pint of beer.

Just you and you can have it all, with three of you each with a straw you all get some of it but nobody gets it all and he who sucks the hardest gets the most!

No. Your total internet bandwidth is shared regardless of whether it is over WiFi or cable.

That said even a video stream will not require 38Mbps and you should have little problem satisfying 2 gamers and a video steam with a 38Mbps connection - especially a wired one.

Actually every packet will be delivered at 100 or even 1000Mbps depending on the internal network speed - it's just that 38Mbps will not be able to populate packets for all of the time so there will be lengthy (in gigabit terms) periods of idleness.

I have two gamers (the Mini-Guns ;) ) and we often stream downstairs on a 40mb FTTC broadband line, no-one ever complains...

this is just to help clarify things even more for you :)
