Has osbourne saved FTBs?

He hasn't 'saved' anyone. They have to 'save' themselves, not rely on others to do so. My gut feeling is that prices will fall – though perhaps not by very much. I don't think rents can go up much more because people will certainly not be able to afford them, so landlords would lose the benefit of having BTL. That and the higher cost of buying the properties will probably make more property available for buying to live in.
How can they save themselves when rents are high, big dep are needed and cost of living is high - there are exceptions who can fight out of this but most can't.0 -

All true except is the cost of living high? Last time I looked food, utility and petrol prices were down sharply year on year as was anything electronic, in fact only 'service' stuff like cinema, eating out, coffee and massages were up which were not on my essentials list when I was saving for a deposit.I think....0 -
No - prices will just go up and more first time buyers will be priced out.
London house prices are 50% higher than when he became Chancellor - now we have to give first time buyers interest free deposits of 40% to buy there. Anyone notice the problem!:D
Maybe without these helpful schemes boosting house prices more first time buyers might have been able to buy now without them.0 -

one would speculate that, unless the actual numbers of houses were different in those two scenerios, then a similar number of people would have bought0 -

Is there any evidence that the cost of living is that high? Although rents might be higher now then historically, I think previous generations would have spent much more of their income on food. A clothing is now cheaper than it has ever been.
Although many people live hand to mouth, I perceive that many people's inability to save is due to consumerism. Take today for example....thousands of people rushing out to "save" money buying tat they don't need."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0 -

Why is it key? Planning is under constant reform. What in the planning process is stopping developers building properties?
There are thousands of extant permissions which aren't being implemented, suggesting planning really isn't the main issue.0 -
Is there land anywhere in England that would not be worth more with planning permission - if not then planning is definitely the problem.I think....0

Without consumerism the UK economy would be in dire straits. There's no indication that rebalancing the economy is working. As the UK's ability to produce things for itself continues to diminish.0 -

the sole purpose of working is to consume0
