Probably to prevent some idiot falling off and making a claim also.

Isn't that only the case if the garage is separate from the rest of the property.

Really! I could list more than 10 good reasons why someone would want access to a flat roof.
    Please do tell us

I am curious too. Who on earth would want access to the flat roof?! And why?

As someone said earlier; its probably to stop someone falling off.

Party location, BBQ or a quiet area to sun bath naked.

BBQs are an excellent reason to not allow access to the roof. Why would a LL want to let tenants damage a flat roof by tramping around and possibly burning holes in it? There is also the problem of chasing rent from tenants who have drunkenly toppled over the edge.

I can think of a lot of reasons why a tenant might want access. None of them are compelling if the landlord doesn't want them to have access, though.

.....followed by a compensation claim after said tenant had drunkenly tumbled off the roof...

In my last house I used to watch tenants renting the place sitting there at intervals on that flat roof dangling their legs over the edge of the roof:eek:

There was quite a few times, to my knowledge, when they were taking risk with their safety and I also felt sorry for the landlord (ie because of people tramping around all over a roof that wasn't designed for that at all).

If it's at the OP's someone needs to bring a pair of bolt croppers to open the access door.

Shall we let the wind die down a bit before we go partying?
