Victoria's Secret faulty item return troubles

Hi!
I purchased 3 pairs of knickers from the Birmingham Bull ring branch of Victoria's Secrets last Friday. I unpacked my goods at home (Plymouth) the night before last (weds) to discover that one of them has a fault.
I phoned the store yesterday and asked if I could have an exchange and they agreed but the only way I can do this is to go into a store. I explained where I lived and was told this was their policy. I asked if I could post them back to them with a copy if the reciept and they said no.
I am really disappointed. I got these for a special occasion and have no plans to go anywhere near one of their stores. My nearest store is Birmingham and it's about 4hours drive from my home.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might get around this I would be very grateful. I want to exchange my faulty item!

You bought them over the counter so had the oppurtunity to inspect them at point of purchase.
VS are offering to exchange, I dont think there is anything else they need to do.
I bought a pair of jeans in a store in the USA which had a fault appear soon after purchase, I didnt expect them to send another pair to the UK.
however I did return to the store a year later and they exchanged them0 -
Some knickers do have holes in what you would call the wrong places. You didn't pick up a pair of these did you?!0

It's mostly because it's underwear.
They have to be sure it's not been worn.0 -

I think Victoria Secrets are doing exactly what they should. You bought them in store, so should return them to the store.
If you made the 4 hour drive from Plymouth to Birmingham to buy them, it would have been a good idea to check them instore before you left.0 -
Is that your closest store? If there is one closer to you could you not arrange to take it into one of those stores?0

I know you asked about an exchange, but it might just be better to go for a refund.
Unfortunately, under the Consumer Rights Act, it states "Whether or not the consumer has a duty to return the rejected goods, the trader must bear any reasonable costs of returning them, other than any costs incurred by the consumer in returning the goods in person to the place where the consumer took physical possession of them."
That said, I see no reason why it has to be you personally who returns them. Posting them back should be a quite adequate method of returning them.0 -

The reason why VS don't have to accept a postal return is given in the quote that you gave from the Consumer rights act."Whether or not the consumer has a duty to return the rejected goods, the trader must bear any reasonable costs of returning them, other than any costs incurred by the consumer in returning the goods in person to the place where the consumer took physical possession of them."0 -
If you have worn them, sell them on ebay, there are people who will pay good money for them.0
