Using Halifax Debit in Bookmakers

I tried to put some money into one of those betting machines in the bookmakers when i was in with my brother in law (i dont really gamble) but my Halifax debit card was denied twice. I have plenty of money in the account.
Do you need to activate it somehow to do a gambling transaction?

I am pretty sure you don't, but banks like blocking transactions that don't fit into your spending pattern and look suspicious as a result.
