New Funding Changes & How to Fund First Year

Options
I've recently returned to studying with the plan to go to university. I was hoping to apply this year but I may have to wait until next year. It's for an NHS course which in accordance with the Autumn budget, will no longer be funded for applicants applying next year onwards.

My problem is that I withdrew from a degree in my younger years because I became ill and couldn't continue. This wasn't an NHS-related degree and so I used some of my finance for this. I am now only eligible to apply for 2 years student finance and would have to fund the first year of a degree myself.

I've signed the petition regarding this issue but I doubt anything will change. So, now I'm asking if anyone knows how I might go about securing alternative funding for my first year? Any help or advice is appreciated.

According to a statement by the Council of Deans of Health, people applying for NHS-related courses will be exempt from the rule that you can only have a loan for your first degree course, so you should be okay after all :)

    I hope this works:

If you were ill and can prove this to Student Finance with doctors letters and letters from your uni then you can claim back the funding used anyway. So it isn't a problem, you won't need to fund any of it.

My DD did this but only needed a letter from her GP, they if they feel inclined can "gift" you back a year.

I did the same. Always better to have more evidence and send it all off.
  • Thanks for the replies and advice, folks. I've now requested a letter from my doctor so hopefully that will help.

@SuperCat007 - did you have more than the doctor's letter? If so, what else did you add to the evidence?

To anyone who has done this: when did you send off the evidence, prior to applying for finance or at the same time?

After you apply, you need to tell them you're sending in CPR evidence and you need your customer reference number to put on the letter.

I also had letters from the uni, and from other support workers at the uni. (it was conditions at the uni with made my health worse so it was a long standing complaint). But if you can get more evidence together then just send in everything you have.

Thanks, SuperCat. I've been trying to get hold of someone at the uni but I can never get through to who I need. I emailed also but no reply so far. I'm going to try again tomorrow. I was also dealing with a uni support worker so that's also a possible option for extra evidence. Thanks again! :)
