Can I Pay Daily Bills on Amex

Options
Hi,

Struggling to find any UK info on this... Can you pay direct debits/automatic payments using Amex? I want to use my Amex as much as possible to get as many rewards as possible (seems silly not to take advantage)!

So can I set up things like my car finance to be paid by my Amex, phone contract etc etc... Then just pay my charge cards balance in full every month?

Thanks in advance,

ThriftMr95 :j

  • Generally not. You can't set up DDs from a card, but some suppliers, particularly annual providers such as card insurance, may allow you to use a credit card.

The ones who do let you do it may charge you for the privilege. Aviva wanted 1.5% for me to pay my annual car insurance premium by credit card last week so I used a debit card instead.

Amex is a charge card, not a bank account. Just think of it as a credit card which has to be paid in full without fail on time every month.
If the provider accepts credit cards and Amex is one of the cards that they take then yes, but visa/mastercard are more commonly accepted as Amex charge them higher fees.

Not quite, Amex offer both charge cards that operate as you say and regular credit cards.

The OP stated that they held an Amex charge card. My reply was in that context. I know that Amex also issue credit cards.
  • How much does Amex give you back? Would you be better off paying them through a NatWest Reward account (£3pm fee) and getting 3% back?
