That's why I was very specific about location.

I know, I'm originally from Newcastle, and I have also lived in both Germany and Holland.

Actually there's most of a world outside of London. London obviously isn't part of the world outside London.

your both crying over an increase to 15% from 12% on stamp duty for the portion above £1.5 million on the purchase price for properties which will be rented out

people buying say a £1,750,000 house to rent out not afford the extra £7,500?

i hate to say it but it sounds like you've both become far removed from the average person (or maybe you always were)

I'm not crying (or complaining), merely commenting, in fact, I was downplaying the amount of stamp duty payable. In any case, I don't think it is very likely that we would spend as much as £1.5m on a house, we actually had that conversation last weekend when we discussed whether we should view this:

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-50520469.html?premiumA=true

and that was to live in (not paying the additional 3%, we concluded that after we retire we should probably try and get something of the same quality/size etc. a bit further out (i.e. not so much of a commuter town) for not much more than £1m. It isn't just the stamp duty, its also the labour Gov lurking with their mansion tax, not to mention the council tax.

    thats a lovely looking house

i'm not trying to have a go (though it may sound like i am) as i am sure that you have worked hard to put yourself in that position in life

but the majority of people (probably about 95% of the population) could only dream of owning a house like that if they won the lottery

but it does kinda prove my point that you are a bit far removed from the average joe

Just because I have money it doesn't mean that I live in another world, beyond being able to afford certain things. In fact, as I said above, we concluded that it didn't represent value (to us) not because of the price tag, but for the other fees/costs (both existing and potential) associated with it.

I'm not crying either. I don't live in the UK and my chances of buying a house there are vanishingly small.

I suppose with you having family out there, the chances of coming back once your children reach a certain age gets much slimmer.
