DVLA driving license fee

Because my DLA/PIP transition is happening just as my bus pass is due to expire I thought I'd apply on the grounds of being medically unfit to drive.

The council said my statement from the DVLA is too old and asked me to get a new one. DVLA said apply by post and send a cheque as if I'm refused they won't cash it and would just securely destroy it (I'm sure that's what happened last time but it was 5 years ago).

This morning I checked my online banking and they cashed the cheque! I'm worried as I know I shouldn't drive, I black out almost daily without warning, have double vision that makes me constantly dizzy and am missing a chunk of my central visual field. I declared all of this on the many relevant medical disclosure forms.

Does anyone know if the DVLA now take the application fee even if they don't issue the license? I can't imagine having to appeal being granted a driving license but I genuinely am a hazard to road users - hell I can't even use a kettle safely.

You'll be far better off ringing DVLA and asking them what's happening to be honest.

If you're medically unfit to drive then i don't understand why they gave you your provisional?? I would have rang DVLA by now to find out what's going on rather than ask on a forum.....

I was in theatres today and couldn't get through on my lunch break. Filled in 3 different medial disclosure forms and sent the application to the correct post code, the last thing I expected in the post today was a driving license. I was hoping someone was going to reply and say "oh this is policy as they're not allowed to just shred cheques now but you'll get one back from them as a refund with your letter"

So I got through to them on my tea break and it turns out they're still waiting to hear back from my cardiologist and are as flummoxed as I am as to how I have a provisional license. Been asked to return it while they await word from cardiology.
