Debenhams MasterCard Scam

I'm pretty sure that this is a blatant scam by Debenhams MasterCard...

I made a purchase whereby I was a about £2 under my limit.

A few days later Debebhams added their interest and caused me to go overdrawn. They then added an addition charge of £12 stating that I went over my limit.

1) There are no details in my account or statement.

2) Thus is now the 3rd time they have done this.

I checked my Debenhams account each time before making a purchase so as NOT to go over my limit. Although I am actually unable to go over my limit for the simple reason is that my limit IS MY LIMIT.

It is Debenhams that cause my account to go over the limit and then charge me an 'over my limit' charge.

SURELY THIS IS ILLEGAL and at best HIGHLY UNETHICAL!

I would greatly appreciate some advice about this.

I am going to phone them in the morning - however, they make us go through a gruelling menu that seems to take ages before taking us to their so-called support.

I believe this is to keep us on the phone to make more money from us.

Thank you in advance of advice

  • No, it's not a scam. You need to allow for charges within your limit, including interest.

The same applies to all cards, so check how you are managing any others.

if you know you're generating interest you need to leave a buffer amount available for statement day.

if you're paying in full, this thread wouldn't even be relevant as you'd still be within your limit with £2 available on statement day.

I would have thought that by now, common sense would have told you that your own actions are the root cause of your problems.

A self inflicted scam to cost yourself money.

If you look at each monthly statement you will see an estimate of the next month's interest should you only make the minimum payment. That is to help you budget. Having said that, fi you have not already done so, you may find that they look favourably on your first request for a refund.

Yes I'm sure it is illegal, ring up Action Fraud and report it and see what happens when they ask you what law is broken

Credit cards are simple - if you don't pay off the balance in full, you get charged interest which is added onto your bill. If you are not managing your card properly and are not aware of how they charge interest then I would suggest cancelling it and using a debit card.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
