Just a warning!
Was called today by a person (British accent) who started waffling on about my Diageo shares - said the annual report was delayed and then tried to lead into talk about dividends. I led him on for a while, but I think he realised that I wasn't swallowing his spiel when I told him that altough I was enjoying our conversation I had to go and watch Flog It. .
It was obviously a scam. Looking up the phone number other people have had the same tale, though the type of shares have been changed to ones relevant to them.See:-

The only thing that bothers me is how do thay know what shares I own? Is there a list of every company's shareholders publicly available?

The names of shareholders are available from Companies House - In the past, an animal rights group had been targeting shareholders of Huntington Life Sciences after using the public records.
If you want to avoid being associated with a company or don't want your name "on file", have a look at using a nominee account.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
