With respect to the gears, they use a cable (two actually) not a linkage.

My Vectra is a bit notchy going into 1st, you have to push it up/away then across to the right slightly, I have no issue with it, but when other people drive it they try to force it into 1st, which has now damaged the travel limiting notch (just a little plastic rail that stops the gear lever going too far left/right) and made it seem even worse. Even though I've personally adjusted the cables correctly by locking out the gearbox as per procedure.

So it might be that the previous owner kept trying to force it and has damaged that on yours. In which case no amount of adjusting the cables is going to fix it, even if the cables are spot on, because the gear lever can move further left than it should, it'll keep feeling notchy.

Many thanks for the information - I'll keep this in mind. It just further justifies my "no tweaks" attitude.

I would suggest taking into the dealership a letter outlining your experiences 1 copy for the service manager and 1 copy for the dealer principal and send an email copy to Network Q. Making sure all parties are aware the others have been informed. For the dealer principal and the service manager I would start the letter saying "I have recently purchased my first Vauxhall from you and would like to share my experience with you....". I would emphasise your disappointment in the way this has been handled, the word unsatisfactory should be included as well, and the lack of courtesy car and the cost and inconvenience that has caused. In all 3 cases I would ask that they contact you to discuss the matter

When the car is next looked at make sure they have a courtesy car available, don't leave it unless they do. Arrange that the service manager or at least a mechanic goes for a test drive both before and after the work is done. Don't let them have the courtesy car back until you are satisfied.

Thanks very much for the advice. I'll find out who the service manager and dealer principal are today and hand in the letters after work. Hopefully they are actually passed on to the correct people if I am unable to do that in person.

I'm aware of how close we are getting to the holiday season and can't honestly see this being rectified over the next few weeks - eventually running over to mid/late-January and past the Network Q warranty cut off. If the work is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty do I have a leg to stand on given that the issue was pointed out well before the Network Q warranty ended?

Given the symptoms, difficult gear change, high clutch bite and noise from under the pedals i would be looking at the clutch being on the way out.

whilst not normal for a 63 plate vehicle it is not impossible plus we do not know the mileage.i have seen drivers destroy a clutch in a couple of hundred miles. Not saying it was the OP it could have been the prior owner.

Problem is the clutch will not be covered by warranty as it is wear and tear.

Thank you. I wondered about this and mentioned the clutch during my first visit, but they dismissed it straight away. I believe it is covered under the Network Q warranty, but not manufacturer's? Another reason why they are not willing to carry out the work (before it runs out).

FYI - mileage is around 14500. I have covered less than 2000 since purchase.
  • Well, I handed in letters to the Dealer Prinicpal and the Service Manager on Monday (30/11). They were supposedly unavailable at the time (convenient). I also emailed Vauxhall detailing the ongoing issues.

I am yet to receive a response from any of them. Doubtful the letters actually reached the managers at the dealership, but not getting my hopes up for any replies!

Keep at it. What is the situation with the car at the moment? Do you still have it, do the garage have it?

I still have the car after it was returned to me last Wednesday with the same issues. No response from the dealer management/Vauxhall since.

Can I just ask, how long was it from purchase to you first raising the issues that still exist with Vauxhall?

It was first seen by the dealership after almost 9 months. Problems occurred after 8 months, but took so long to get it booked in. Now been ongoing for 1.5 months.
